<div style="text-align: left;">
I would like to say it was a surprising loss to the Titans but after the way the season played out, it was obvious they weren't a threat to return to the Super Bowl to defend their title. All season long I debated with "fans" about this team and how good they actually were. Most fans are just that, fans, that can't look at this team objectively. To them, a 12-4 record meant this team was due for another deep playoff run and as I tried to contest with them, they were sure this team was great. AS good as they were to begin the season, it became apparent that they were lacking talent in some very important places. I'm not taking anything away from the team. A 12-4 record is a good record to finish with but the level of competition to start the year, when the Patriots were 8-0, was much weaker than the competition to end the season. Finishing the last 8 games 4-4 should have been a good measure of the capabilities of this team.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Starting the season 8-0, many people in the media questioned the competition and rightfully so. The teams the Patriots played in those 8 games finished the season with a 43-69 record and only 1 of those teams finished with a record over .500 and made the playoffs (Buffalo). For the final 8 games, those teams had a combined record of 70-58 and 5 of the 8 teams were playoff teams. The numbers show that the first half of the season was a much easier schedule than the second half. The defense was tops in the NFL and the offense averaged 31PPG and 370YPG average in those first 8 games. Once the second half of the season started with Baltimore, the competition improved. Although the defense still managed to play well in most of the games, the offensive numbers plummeted and the defense failed the team when they couldn't come up with a stop on the biggest drive of the season which would have given them a first round bye. Instead, journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick led Miami down the field, scoring a touchdown in the closing seconds of the game, forcing New England to play their first Divisional Round Playoff game in a decade. Not exactly the Patriots teams we've come to know that pull out a big stop or a late score to win the game.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The defense however was not the big disappointment this year. The offense is clearly what held this team back from their goals. There were some key injuries on that side of the ball. Most notably, FB James Devlin who went out week 2 with a neck injury and starting Center David Andrews who was held out all season with blood clots in his lungs. With Devlin sidelined, Sony, Rex and James White struggled without the old school style fullback. Linebacker, Elandon Roberts tried to fill in and while he wasn't horrible, it wasn't the same rushing attack as the prior season with Devlin leading the way. The season also started without starting LT Isaiah Wynn, the Patriots #23 overall draft pick in 2018 and newest first round pick N'Keal Harry. No matter who's injured, games must still be played and all players need to be ready to start. Although Harry was a rookie and Wynn didn't play much last season, as first round picks there is a level of expectations of you. When the two returned, they did play alright. Nothing spectacular to start but Harry began to show some promise while Wynn, who took over for Trent Brown, had his problem protecting Brady's blind side but he was far from the main issue. The absence of Andrews was the biggest situation the offensive line had to deal with other than the retirement of Gronkowski. The general consensus was the offense was struggling because receivers couldn't get open for Brady. Now as true as that nay have been, Brady just didn't seem as tuned in as he has been in the past. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After starting the season with Gordon, Edelman, Dorsett and rookie Jakobi Myers, Bill gave Brady some much needed help and went and signed recently released Antonio Brown from Oakland. That only lasted 1 game which turned out to be a good game for both Brady and Brown. But it was just not to be. Brown couldn't stay off social media and Kraft had already had enough of Brown and he was released. Once Brown was released, Josh Gordon was injured and was released himself shortly after his injury leaving the team with Edelman, Dorsett, Myers and Harry. The were short at WR so Bill made a deal right before the deadline, sending a 2nd round pick to Atlanta for WR Mohamed Sanu Sr. I was shocked to see a second round pick was sent for Sanu Sr. after seeing San Francisco acquire Emmanuel Sanders from Denver for a 3rd and 5th round pick. Sanu ended up having one good game and was ineffective for the most part of the season. Saying the Patriots were thin at the position was an understatement but I believe they could have gotten a better player for a 2nd round pick. Receivers not getting separation and numerous drops plagued Brady and the offense all season. That, coupled with a struggling running game, the offense was not what we're used to seeing from them.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
With all the problems the offense had to deal with, the biggest adjustment was at Tight End. Having to overcome the retirement of one of, if not the greatest TE to ever play automatically created a massive hole in the offense all around. Not having Gronk for both the running and passing game created a situation the Patriots weren't ready for. They tried their best to get a serviceable TE but it clearly wasn't enough with Ben Watson and Matt LaCosse. For starters, Watson nor LaCosse were capable of setting the edge for runs outside. They also couldn't handle Outside Linebackers or Defensive Ends when protecting the pass. Time after time I seen the TE attempt to make a block and either get pushed backwards or completely taken off their feet and out of the play. Tough to maintain a running game with your lead blocker out and your TE and OL can't create holes. As much as Gronk was missed in the running game, he was missed even more in the passing attack. First, Brady missed his big, reliable target that always seemed to make a play in crucial moments of games. This season, Edelman was the only player Brady seemed to trust, however, Jules dropped numerous passes including a pass on 3rd down while wide open at a crucial part of the Playoff game. Next, defenses were able to shrink the field without the threat of Gronk going up the seam. Not having Gronk out there allowed the defense to either bring an extra guy in the box to stop the run or to double team Edelman. Which brings me to the final reason. Brady and the Patriots like to run a lot of crossing or option routes. Without Gronk, defenses were able to play man defense on the outside against weak WR's and then double team Jules. Edelman would run a cross or option route and the Linebacker wouls slip under his route while the DB would play behind him. Julian still had a decent season, especially playing with injuries, but with him double covered most of the time, the offense had to rely on other players to make plays. The offense became very predictable with screen plays and quick slants. Defenses had little trouble making New England work for yards, first downs and touchdowns the later part of the year.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm no coach, but I do understand the game very well.I felt the offense should have been doing many other things when "the norm" wasn't successful. They rarely changed up the offense making it easy for defenses to game plan for them. Defensive backs were able to jump the quick routes because there was no threat over the top. Once Gordon was released, Sanu and Harry were the only WR's well over 6ft tall. They never utilized their size by going downfield and allowing someone to go up and make a play. Harry came in after his injury and did show signs of being a good athletic receiver. After the playoff loss I heard Fleger and Mazz continuously say Harry sucks. I disagree with that and don't believe he sucks, I believe McDaniels misused a guy you drafted for athleticism. Let the big body receiver go downfield and use his size against smaller DB's. He's not always going to make the catch but there were so many defensive pass interference calls made this year. They also struggled in the Red Zone. What happened to the fade and toss up to your big guy? Inside the 5 yard line all they tried to do was pound the ball in there to no avail. That leads me to mu next complaint, some may disagree but Rex Burkhead is not a good enough RB to get as many carries as he did, especially close to the goalline. OK, yes, he did make a few plays but it come back to predictable. Rex comes in the game when they're inside the 5 yard line and everyone knows its a run. They drafted a RB in the 3rd round last season with Damien Harris from Alabama and even though we can't see what happens during practice, Harris should have seen more action during the season other than a few drives during garbage time. The offense did try to get Sony Michele involved in the passing game but Sony had troubles making easy catches or getting open.<br />
<br />
New England now goes into the off season with moves to make and many key players to resign or replace. After not advancing to the AFC Championship for the first time in 3 years, the Patriots have big decisions to make. The biggest and most important being whether to bring 42 year old Tom Brady back. Brady has expressed his frustration with the organization and the lack of a contract spanning more than a single season. So I'm assuming before any other decision is made, New England has to decide if they want to continue to compete for a championship or go the other direction and begin the rebuilding process. I believe they will sign Tom back for 2 more years but he has stated he is ready to talk to other teams. For the sake of what I'm going to say next, I'll assume Brady comes back. So the QB is signed, what's next for the organization? It's really hard to address everything that needs to be done. First, Tom needs to get on the same page with Harry, Sanu and whoever else they decide to bring in and they do need help at the position. Dedicate himself back to the development process and get comfortable with his guys because I don't think Rob Gronkowski is walking through that door. Phillip Dorsett is a Free Agent and he wasn't productive enough to bring him back. There are a couple free agents they could make a run at. Although A.J. Green is talented, he's shown that he can't stay healthy so I'd pass on him. Amari Cooper hasn't resigned with Dallas as of yet but he's going to warrant too much money that they can't afford him. Next is Emmanuel Sanders who they should have gotten over Sanu in the first place. With him going to the Super Bowl with the 49ers, he may get a really good contract so it's doubtful he'll be available. The last player that is a pending Free Agent is Larry Fitzgerald. I've always wanted him to be a Patriot. A consummate professional who's had the bad luck of playing for Arizona his entire career. Has been on a few good teams but the lure of possibly making it to another Super Bowl just may be enough to get the aging WR out of Arizona. However, he has been very loyal to them so it may be tough to convince him to leave. So now you're left with mid to low tier players such as Cobb or gaining the trust of Demaryius Thomas again or even bringing back Danny Amendola. The tough part for New England is the fact they gave up their 2nd round pick and they have many free agents and not a ton of cap room so finding a team to trade with with be a tough option. If something could be done, Stephon Diggs has shown his frustration with Cousins all season and in the first playoff game. He may want out of Minnesota and has been rumored to be connected with the Patriots. But once again, they don't have much to offer to get an impactful player. It appears that it will be 1 of 5 options. Hope Fitzgerald wants a shot to win a Super Bowl, work something out in a trade for a WR that can actually produce. Sign a mid to low tier guy that will come in but won't make much of an impact. Take your chances at drafting another WR that won't end up seeing much playing time unless he goes in to camp and really stands out and end up having 2 second year guys and a rookie or they deal with what they have and hope for the best. Now to the most appealing position that was a glaring need, Tight End. Ben Watson is a Free Agent and after retiring and then coming back, I don't see him returning for another season. There are 4-5 guys that are potential Free Agents that would be much better options than what Brady had to deal with this season. Players that could be available are, Eric Ebron, Hunter Henry, Austin Hooper, Daniel Fells, Charles Clay and Brent Celek. The obvious best options would be Ebron, Henry and Hooper but it will come down to how much they'll cost. If you can't get either of those guys, any of the other names mentioned, with possibly the exception of Clay, would be a much better option than Watson and Lacosse although Lacosse has a year left under contract.<br />
<br />
After addressing WR and TE, the offensive line needs major work. Wynn will be back and hopefully Andrews can come back healthy. Other than those two, there needs to be changes. Joe Thuney is a Free Agent and I doubt they'll spend the money to retain him. There are a few guys that are potential Free Agents that could come in and finally give Tom some time, but knowing Bill, he'll use their first round pick on an offensive lineman, throw just anyone in there for the time being and develop the youth as he always has done. Unless he finally comes to grips that time is running out and keeping Tom upright is their best chance to return to glory. Both guys that played Center in the absence of Andrews are Free Agents. I doubt any other team would offer them large contracts so there is a possibility Bill brings one of those guys back to take Thuneys position. Unfortunately, there most likely won't be a whole lot done on the line so it appears the line will consist of Wynn, Karras or Ferentz, Andrews, Cannon and Mason.<br />
<br />
And now the expensive side of the ball. The big question is will any of the looming Free Agents take a discount to continue playing in New England? Devin McCourty is at the end of his 5 year contract and at 33, I doubt Bill wants to invest a large sum of money on McCourty. The Pro Bowl safety had a good year racking up 5 interceptions but from what I began to notice throughout the season, Devin slowed down a bit and appeared to become soft. It was evident during the playoff game when McCourty constantly tried to force a fumble rather than making a tackle on Henry. For a defense to stop the run, your safeties need to be physical when needed. Next is a trio of Linebackers that played significant roles on the defense. One of them actually took over for Devlin at Fulback. The players are Kyle Van Noy who's 29, Elandon Roberts 26 and Jamie Collins who is 30. It's doubtful the franchise will have the cap space to sign all three. However, I was right at the beginning of the season when I said Chace Winovich would be the rookie that makes the most impact on the team. But he's an outside rush guy that won't transition to an ILB role. If by chance they are able to bring all three back, someone is going to have to take less money to stay. Collins, who went to Cleveland from New England and came back, had a career resurrection upon his return. At 30, he could be the best candidate to take less money to stay. Even if they lose two of the three guys, they are going to have to find some options to fill those positions. This team isn't stacked with great depth at Linebacker. Lastly are two interior lineman that saw quite a bit of playing time. Both Adam Butler and Danny Shelton are looming Free Agents and other than Lawerence Guy, it's another position New England isn't deep at. Clearly the team doesn't have enough cap room to sign everyone back. Especially with two special teamers also looking at Free Agency. Matthew Slater and Nate Ebner don't do much for the offense nor the defense, but Slater is a perennial Pro Bowler on special teams. Will some other team throw enough money at Slater to lure him away? Only time will tell and even though the season is over for the Patriots, there are two teams left in the hunt so it won't be long until questions start getting answered.<br />
<br />
As stated, it's obvious the organization won't have enough money to bring everyone back and make the changes that are needed. Even with the option to buy out players like Sanu and Burkhead, the money just isn't available, especially if the main goal is to bring Brady back who likely won't take yet another team friendly deal. Even if they decide it's time to move on from Tom, deal with Stidham and transfer to a strong run game, the Running Backs that could be available to make a difference will require large contracts. Most notably, the two guys that could be difference makers are Derrick Henry and Melvin Gordon. I do believe New England does need a big punishing back but not at the cost it would require to get either of those guys. A couple other guys that could be available are Austin Eckler and Carlos Hyde. Eckler isn't a big, punishing back and would just serve as another passing back. Let's just hope that after a decent rookie season, Sony Michele just had a sophomore slump season. May not have been all his fault with the loss of Devlin and Andrews and the lack of blocking from tight end. I also doubt Belichick would go get a big money guy and limit Sony, his previous first round selection basically chalking him up as a bust.<br />
<br />
The Tom Brady era could be at an end and with that, so does the two decades of dominance. Will Jarrett Stidham be the long term solution? If not, do they try to get Teddy Bridgewater in who filled in greatly for Drew Brees? The Patriots hold the 23rd pick in the draft and it's highly unlikely any of the top QB prospects would drop that far down. Is there a guy they like that they could get in next years draft if Brady does go, Stidham doesn't work out and they have a disastrous season? Still much too early to tell what this team will look like in September. One thing that is obvious is they'll have Brady back leading this team or they'll have moved on from Tom and a new era of New England Patriots football will begin. Whatever the case, changes have to be made for this offense to succeed and there will be new faces on defense if there aren't players already in the system that can come in and keep this defense as one of the best in the league. Stay Tuned! </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
Quite possibly one of the most power shifting and impactful Free Agency period in years. A lot of new faces in different places and it's going to make for a very interesting season, especially out west. A few changes in the East, one being Kyrie and Durant but he'll be out for the year so the Nets have to wait another year to be at full strength. Horford leaving Boston and heading to Philadelphia give the 76ers another big that can stretch the floor. Jimmy Butler to the Heat and Kemba swapping Free Agency destinations with Terry Rosier. But the landscape, balance of power and the competition out West has changed so much that I believe there are going to be a couple real talented teams that are outside the top 8. Believe it or not,(and remember, it's just my opinion but you heard it here first), there is going to be a team who's playoff streak of 22 years will be snapped. You can argue or debate if you want, which I'm sure you will because it is quite bold, but looking at the talent on the teams in the West, there are teams that were out that are pretty much guaranteed to be in. With all this said, you have to keep in-mind that these are based on players remaining healthy. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: center;">
EASTERN CONFERENCE</h4>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To me, the East is by far the easiest to begin to predict. The way the talent is distributed, there are far more obvious teams that will succeed and make the playoffs than the West. Not too much shake up as Free Agency was concerned. A few big name players moved around but not nearly as active or impactful as the West. With the amount of games played in the NBA season, it's much harder to predict what will happen in a basketball season compared to the NFL season. As I said, Durant came east but he'll be out so Kyrie has to man the ship in his season long absence. Couple changes with Boston and Philly but no major overhaul. Jimmy Butler looks to give the Heat a bump but I honestly feel like this was a move for a couple reasons. First, games are played throughout the winter and having at least half your game where its warm all year was a factor. But most of all it was a money move. Other than a few moves, the East was relatively quiet compared to West.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u><b>EAST STANDINGS</b></u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Milwaukee Bucks - 61-21</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Philadelphia 76ers - 53-29</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Boston Celtics - 49-33</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Indiana Pacers - 45-37</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Brooklyn Nets - 43-39</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Toronto Raptors - 43-39</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Miami Heat - 42-40</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Detroit Pistons - 41-41</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Orlando Magic - 37-45</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Charlotte Hornets - 35-47</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Washington Wizards - 35-47</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Atlanta Hawks - 33-49</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
New York Knicks - 23-59</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cleveland Cavaliers - 19-63 </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now on to the vaunted Western Conference. All I have to say is "WOW", there are a lot of talented teams in the West and it's far beyond what the East has to offer. Major additions to teams in the West like the Clipper, Lakers and Rockets. The West is going to be a very exciting and interesting and it's a shame that a couple of real talented teams that would be in the playoffs out East, won't have quite enough out West. I looked at last years standings and with the change to the Lakers and Clippers, two playoff teams from last season will be out and unfortunately it's the Spurs that may end their streak of 22 consecutive years in the playoffs. Call me crazy, I get it, but the Spurs were the 7 seed last year with a 48-34 record. Good for 5th in the East, I don't think that's going to be enough for the Spurs to get in this season. Dallas gets Porzingis back and healthy so I can't see them at 14th this year. Improvements to teams has a team like Denver, who was the 2 seed, drop down to 5. Going to be a fun year in the West and it's going to be the talk of the NBA season all year. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<u><b>WESTERN STANDINGS</b></u></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Los Angeles Clippers - 60-22</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Houston Rockets - 58-24</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Los Angeles Lakers - 55-27</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Portland Trail Blazers - 52-30</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Denver Nuggets - 50-32</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Golden State Warriors - 50-32</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Utah Jazz - 49-33</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oklahoma City Thunder - 44-38</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
San Antonio Spurs - 44-38</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Dallas Mavericks - 42-40</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
New Orleans Pelicans - 39-43</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Minnesota Timberwolves - 37-45</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Sacramento Kings - 36-46</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Memphis Grizzlies - 30-52</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Phoenix Suns - 29-53</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have Milwaukee and Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference Finals</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have a dream scenario of LA in the Western Conference Finals with both the Clipper and the Lakers fighting for a Finals birth.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As far as who wins, I have no idea and each of the 4 teams there have a chance and their reasons why they should win. The Bucks have the reigning MVP who now have a year like last under his belt and can learn from mistakes. Philadelphia is incredibly large and is going to give smaller teams fits, IF THEY CAN SCORE OUTSIDE. If healthy, their starting lineup has 4 player 6'9" or taller. We'll see if it works out or if it will backfire against smaller quicker teams.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Out West, it is a shootout but with the seeding as I have it, the Lakers would take out the Rockets before the Conference Finals. LeBron is on a mission and now has a top 5 weapon to ball with. The only thing that could hurt the Lakers, its depth and expectations. With the Clippers, they get 2 perennial MVP vote receivers and Leonard just came off a surprising NBA Finals Championship with less players than Paul George. How quick can these two figure it out? Also remember, Dock Rivers had the Boston Celtics playing some incredible defense and now he gets a former DPOTY recipient in Leonard and George who has been in the conversation many times. Defense win championships and Doc with these guys will be impressive.</div>

<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Looking forward to the 2019-20 season, the reigning Super Bowl Champions have some major holes to fill. Most importantly, the massive loss of TE Rob Gronkowski and DE Trey Flowers. The All-World TE decided to hang em' up and go out as a champion. Trey Flowers, New Englands best pass rusher and monster of a man Trent Brown departed via free agency. Flowers join ex-defensive coordinator Matt Patricia in Detroit and Brown headed west to sign a massive contract with the Raiders. Other departures include, Wide Receivers Chris Hogan and Cordarrelle Patterson, Tackle LaAdrian Waddle, Defensive Tackle Malcolm Brown and Cornerback Eric Rowe. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;"> Patriot fans as well as NFL analyst thought for sure that Bill Belichick would have addressed the loos of Gronk during the NFL draft. The picks and rounds came and went without a TE being selceted. So for now, the void will have to be filled by former Patriot Benjamin Watson and unknown Matt LaCosse. Obviously it's impossible to replace a player like Gronk and his production in the passing game and his blocking ability. I fully expect a decline from the TE position with and aging Watson and the unknown LaCosse. Patriot fans are still holding hope that Gronk will decide to come out of retirement either before the season starts or shortly after.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> The next position that causes for concern in wide receiver. Brady has done some amazing things without "star" receivers but going in to this season the talent is spread thin and the repor just won't be there. As of now, Brady only has 2 receivers he's familiar with to throw to. There could be a third option but that option is Josh Gordon and it's not clear if or when he'll rejoin the team. Julian Edelman recently signed a 2 year extension, but other than him, many questions loom around this receiving core. With an uncharacteristic move, Belichick drafted WR N'Keal Harry, Wide Receiver from Arizona State with the #32 pick. Early reports say he's showing promise already but hopefully the rookie is ready to come in and make an instant impact. The team decided to place an original round Restricted Free Agent tender on WR Josh Gordon. However, Gordon's return to the team will be determined on his suspension, which the length is currently unknown. Phillip Dorsett resigned, and they added former Bronco and Texan Demaryius Thomas who is coming off injury. With Gronk gone, Brady is going to have to put a lot of trust in some very unfamiliar guys. A big plus is Josh McDaniels stayed as offensive coordinator.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> Other than the loss of Trey Flowers, the defensive side of the ball remains relatively the same. The did lose defensive play caller Brian Flores to Miami but the defense in largely Bill's defense anyways. Most of the big name guys are back including, Gilmore and the McCourty twins. They traded for Michael Bennett in the of-season and he should give the pass rush a boost. Bill also decided to take another chance on former linebacker Jamie Collins. I'm sure Bill is hoping Jamie can "Stick to the script" and not freelance on plays which is why he was shipped off to Cleveland. Some holes left by departing players were filled during the draft. Cornerback JoeJuan Williams was drafted early in the 2nd round. It appears that the Patriots have certain situations for Williams with his 6'3" 2018lb frame. Perhaps match-ups against players like Travis Kelce are in the future. Quite possibly the sexiest pick is DL/LB Chace Winovich out of Michigan. Winovich is the player I think will have the most immediate impact on the team as a rookie. His presence is needed in the positions that were opened up by losses. Going into the season, the defense looks better than it has in the past couple of seasons. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhimpIWQ8JWXj9uzsGNXpYCdJCtlFFA3r3wCzsNPLieJftBTnQ9PXNREveFndnzQTsg27omFE6nExXlKoYOezLzmiM2kdTXXMcMbN5kBZcrsHMi_8abPljMpu2gFC4imKLEITDiHg4hqAZw/s1600/th.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="170" data-original-width="306" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhimpIWQ8JWXj9uzsGNXpYCdJCtlFFA3r3wCzsNPLieJftBTnQ9PXNREveFndnzQTsg27omFE6nExXlKoYOezLzmiM2kdTXXMcMbN5kBZcrsHMi_8abPljMpu2gFC4imKLEITDiHg4hqAZw/s1600/th.jpeg" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: small;"> Obviously there isn't much to worry about when #12 is still behind center and Bill is at the helms. The does have quality on the offensive line and Dante Scharnechia works wonders with new players. James White will still be there to help in the passing game and Sony Michele will man the running game. Even though Sony had a great rookie season, the team opted to draft RB Damien Harris out of Alabama to lighten the load on Michele. I do believe Harris was a great addition at the position in the draft they got him. Alabama running backs always seem to come into the league NFL ready. The Patriots should still win their division even with the improvements of the other divisional teams. They can quite possibly make it to their 10th straight AFC Championship game but as far as making it to the Super Bowl and taking #7 back to New England, we'll just have to wait and see if this team has what it takes. We all know it's extremely hard to just make it to one Super Bowl, never mind the opportunity to make it to four straight and winning their 4th title in 6 years. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"> With a nagging left knee injury, it appears Dustin "Laser Show" Pedroia may have played his last game for the Boston Red Sox. The highly popular and hugely productive second baseman has been dealing with an knee injury for a couple of seasons now. After and excellent 2016 season for Dustin, the Red Sox endured a quick 3 game sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians. Following the early playoff exit, Pedroia had surgery on the left knee in mid-October. At the time, Dustin and the organization had no idea about the troubles yet to come.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"> Dustin was available to start the 2017 season but soon found himself on the 10-Day DL as of May 30th with a wrist sprain. Pedroia soon returned to the lineup which only lasted 2 months. On August 1st, he hit the 10-Day DL once again. This time it was soreness in the left knee which had surgery in the off season. Eleven days later, the Red Sox would announce Dustin would finish the season on the DL due to continued soreness in the knee. On October 25th, it was revealed that Dustin underwent surgery for a complete cartilage restoration and would miss the start of the 2018 season.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> Pedroia started rehab with Triple A affiliate Pawtucket on May 14th and then was added to Boston's active roster on May 26th. After just 3 games, Dustin was back on the DL with inflammation to the left knee. After not much improvement, it was announced on August 4th, that Dustin would be put on the 60-Day DL. Shortly after in early September, news came across that Pedroia would in fact be out for the remainder of the season. As we know, later that season the Red Sox went on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. Because Dustin was not part of the active roster, he does not receive an credit for the title. To begin the 2019 season, Dustin made his way up from Class A Greenville team to being active for the teams home opener on April 9th. He appeared in 6 games and unfortunately returned to the IL with left knee irritation. Once again, rehabbing with Double A team in Portland and then Triple A Pawtucket, Pedroia announced that he will be taking some time to evaluate his health and his future in baseball. That same day, he was moved to the 60-Day IL.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"> If this has been the last we've seen of the 4 time all-star and 4 time Gold Glove winner, I'd have to say it's been an absolutely wonderful career. The 5'9" second baseman played the game with so much heart, hustle and grit that he'll be remembered for decades to come. Drafted in 2004 with the 65th overall pick out of Arizona State as a shortstop, Dustin has numerous accolades and awards. Making his debut in August 2006, Pedroia was named Rookie of the Year in 2007. The following 2008 season, Dustin took home AL MVP honors as well as the Silver Slugger award. At the time, he became on 1 of 3 players to have been named Rookie of the Year and followed it up with an MVP award. The 2 time World Series Champion will finish with some impressive stats in his 14 year career. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"> So if this is it for Dustin, as a fan, I thank you for leaving it all out on the field every game and playing the game of baseball the way it's supposed to be played. Although he may be done as a player, Pedroia has the knowledge and turn his playing career into a coaching career. Don't be surprised to see Dustin "Laser Show" "Peddy" Pedroia in a uniform, but this time hopefully managing a team to victories and titles. Thank You Dustin and good luck you in your future endeavors.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">With a convincing sweep of the Carolina Hurricanes, the Boston Bruins are heading back to the Stanley Cups Finals. This will be the third finals in the past 9 years. The Bruins earned the #3 position in the Playoffs and after first round losses from Tampa Bay and Washington, the Bruins had home ice advantage throughout the remainder of the Playoffs. The Bruins finished the regular season 49-24-9. They had an incredible run starting on January 29th,where the team didn't have a regular time loss spanning 19 games ending on March 10th. In the month of February, the Bruins were 11-0-2. They had numerous winning streaks starting with 4 wins after losing the opener. They had two, 4 games streaks, one, 5 game streak and two, 6 game streaks. They have now entered the finals on a 7 game winning streak.</span><br />

<span style="text-align: left;"> <span style="font-size: large;">It's clear who the backbone of the success for the team is. Even though Rask played his fewest regular season game since being named as a started, he's the clear reason the Bruins have a chance at yet another Stanley Cup. He did have some struggles during the season, but that all has been forgotten with his absolute stellar play in these playoffs. Rask is 12-5 with a 1.96 GAA and a SV% of .939 during his 17 playoff starts. Toronto was by far their toughest challenge forcing Rask and the Bruins to a game 7. During the series, Tuukka faced 223 shots and he saved 207 of them. The second round, the Bruins faced off against the Columbus Blue Jackets with that series going to a game 6. Columbus, had just come off a sweep of the 2019 NHL Presidents' Trophy winners, Tampa Bay Lightning. Against </span></span><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: large;">Columbus, Rask faced 212 shots and turned away 201 of them. In the conference finals verse Carolina, a team that beat out the #2 seed Washington, and then swept the New York Islanders. Rask has his best series having 114 shots come his way and saved 109 of them. To this point in the playoffs, he's faced a total of 549 shots against, saving 517 of them. The most amazing stat is, in the 3 series clinching games, Rask had 1 goal scored against him with two shutouts. Tuukka Rask has been "standing on his head" during the playoffs so far and he's the main reason the Boston Bruins are in position to win another cup. He's playing at the top of his game and seems very cool, calm and collected in the net.</span> </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">The credit doesn't fall solely on Tukka Rask for the success of this team. The team has had just about everyone step up their play in these playoffs. The first line of Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak were absolutely dominant. So far in these first 3 rounds of playoffs, these 3 players have combined for 22 goals and 24 assist. These are the type of stats that you need from a top line to go this deep in the playoffs. In the deciding game four against Carolina, the three of them accounted for all 4 goals. These three, along with David Krejci, have lead this teams power play to some wonderful numbers as well. Especially in this past series verse Carolina. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> The contribution doesn't stop there with the top line. David Krejci, who would be a top center if it weren't for Bergeron, has had a wonderful playoffs as well. With Krejci heading up the second line, he's amassed 4 goals but has been quite the helper with 10 assist. David hasn't been the only player on the lower lines that has come through big. Charlie Coyle, who the Bruins traded Ryan Donato to Minnesota for has turned out to be a major acquisition. The former BU Terrier and Weymouth, Massachusetts native, has come up big with some timely goals. To this point, he has 5 goals and 7 assist. Another addition, Marcus Johansson, who was a trade deadline addition came over from New Jersey and has been productive as well. Johansson has accumulated 3 goals and 6 assist in these playoffs. This is the perfect kind of contribution you'd want from two guys you gave up valuable assets for. Many other players have shown their value through these playoffs, in particular the fourth line that has been gritty and have come up with goals in some big situations. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Defensively, this team is set up perfectly for the style of hockey Bruce Cassidy wants to play. Other than the ageless wonder, Zedeno Chara, the defense is youthful and skilled. The skating and the ability of these young defensemen to carry the puck into the zone has been the difference between these Bruins and the three opponents they've faced. They have had to overcome some injuries but that next player is always ready to step up. Not only are they physical, they are able to put points on the board. In these playoffs, the 7 total defensemen have scored a total of 8 goals and have assisted on 26 goals. Chara wears the captains "C" on his chest and it's rightfully so, but Torey Krug, Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelyck have been the major threats as offensive defensemen. Out of the 26 assist, these three players accounted for 20 of them. Incredible offensive production from the guys that are paid to stop opposing teams from scoring. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"> This team is a perfect example of slow and steady wins the race. It has been an incredible season for a team that lacks what the league would look at as a "superstar". But hockey is the ultimate team sport and they continue to prove that 1 player doesn't make or break the team. Although some would argue that without Tuukka Rask, they wouldn't be in this position but it's still a collective effort to advance this far in any playoffs. Back up goalie, Jaroslav Halak came up big in situations this season when Rask wasn't playing his best or was injured. All is good right now with the Bruins, and even though I would say they aren't as talented as the 2011 and the 2013 teams, this team is extremely deep, has superb power play and a goalie playing like the best goalie in the league. This team has a great chance to raise Lord Stanley's Cup come June. So now we wait in anticipation to see in the Bruins will face St. Louis or San Jose in the Finals. Both of those teams need to proceed with caution because this Bruins team is on fire and they need to "Fear the Bear". </span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;"> With a 116-91 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in game 5 of the 2018/2019 NBA playoffs, the Boston Celtics begin their off season. Throughout the season, talks of Kyrie Irving's decision of staying with the team or leaving for Free Agency has dominated headlines. After earning the #2 seed in the 2017-18 playoffs, the Celtics made it to the Conference Finals facing off against Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. After taking a 2-0 series lead, the series ended up in Boston for a decisive game seven which we all know the results of that. With the Celtics advancing that far, albeit, with the absence of Kyrie and Gordon Hayward, expectations for the 2018-2019 team were extremely high. They were picked to be the top seed in the East and represent the East in the NBA Finals. Now that the season has come and gone, disappointment is the best way to describe this season. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: small;"> Kyrie returned after having surgery on an infection in his left knee that stemmed from a previous injury he had in 2015 and Gordon Hayward was finally able to play after missing the entire 2017-18 season with a horrific ankle injury just 5 minutes into the season. Brad Stevens finally had the team in which him and Danny Ainge put together the previous summer. Jaylen Brown going into his third season and Jason Tatum into his 2nd, were thought to have made huge gains in their game and were to be massive contributors. Marcus Smart signed a new 4 year deal in the off season giving the Celtics back their defensive spark plug. With Big Al, Marcus Morris and Terry Rozier still under contract, the Celtics had a similar roster starting out this season. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"> With the season now over, the Celtics have lots of work to do. When July 1st hits, Boston will have just 6 player under contract for the 2019-20 season. Gordon Hayward, Jaylen Brown, Jason Tatum,Robert Williams, Marcus Smart and Guershon Yabusele are the main guys still on the roster. The work starts here with Kyrie Irving. The Celtics star PG has a player option of $21,329,752 for the 2019-20 season and talks of what his decision will be have been prevalent all season long. Many suggest that a reunion could happen and Kyrie will decide to team up once again with Lebron James and join the Los Angeles Lakers. Some say the Knicks would be a good fit but that only comes if Kevin Durant wants to leave Golden State and join Irving in New York. Others also think that Irving will head to New York, but for the up and coming Brooklyn Nets. </span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: small;"> The
Celtics were unable to make trade offers for Anthony Davis and can't do so until July 1st when the new calendar league starts. Could the addition of Davis be enough to
keep Irving in the green and white?</span> Not many predict that he will decide to opt in to his final year on his contract and stay with Boston. I am one of those, and honestly, I would much prefer to see him go. He came to Boston to "have his own team" and it's just not working out. His style does not fit the coach and his individuality has seemingly torn this team apart. All season when Kyrie struggled, fans were assured that "Playoff Kyrie" would come out when the games matter. The team struggling to win a series against a far less talented Indiana Pacers team playing without their best player and quickly getting knocked out, destroyed, demolished by the Buck's. Fans are sitting here in frustration wondering where "Playoff Kyrie" was. Throughout his time with Boston, Irving has seemed disengaged while the rest of his teammates have struggled to adhere to his style. I'll say it now, good riddance Kyrie and hopefully your next team understands what they are getting themselves into when they decide to throw huge amounts of money at you. Everything sounded great when he first came here but we quickly learned that Kyrie does his own thing and it only destructs a team that wants to play with a team mentality. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> Kyrie isn't the only player with the possibility of moving on. Al Horford has a player option of $30,123,015 and with that kind of money available and his age coming into to factor, I highly doubt "Big Al" will decline his option. He knows at this point in his career, he's not going to see another big contract come his way. Al has always been a great fit with this team. He'll never WOW you with his numbers but his consistency and team play make Al a valuable asset to this team. Another player with a player option for next season is Aron Baynes. The feisty Aussie could choose to resign for $5,453,280 and this could go either way. With a less than productive season, I'm sure the Celtics would rather Aron decline and move on. I see Aron opting in knowing any interest he'd receive from other teams wouldn't warrant him anything more than the $5+ million he'll snatch from Boston. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhztSpzRaKdIHffmPtWV-mOZMomga8e0zcVDRHYY2jzO-DB6YTo7CWYWYTzElTwrxFaAEZJUX1w4-D9QEc1az1rhnOZ9zlVHZHShtpjAhM6_uMRpnCpV0VUDYu4B02RJe3QO3feB-0l70Z7/s1600/maxresdefault.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhztSpzRaKdIHffmPtWV-mOZMomga8e0zcVDRHYY2jzO-DB6YTo7CWYWYTzElTwrxFaAEZJUX1w4-D9QEc1az1rhnOZ9zlVHZHShtpjAhM6_uMRpnCpV0VUDYu4B02RJe3QO3feB-0l70Z7/s400/maxresdefault.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> My biggest concern is what will the Celtics and Danny Ainge will do with Terry Rozier. Terry's Free Agency status is restricted, so the Celtics would have to match any offer he would receive from other teams. The initial qualifying offer for Terry is $4,285,798. If this all came a season prior, Terry would be looking at a much larger offer from teams. His mediocre season rolled right into the Playoffs where "Scary Terry" became a ghost. Rozier went from averaging 16.5PPG with a field goal percentage of .406 in the 2018 playoffs to a dismal 6.4PPG and a .322 field goal percentage these past playoffs. It could have just been a case of not having the starting role with a healthy Irving but his regular season statistics were down as well. This put the Celtics in a very "Scary" situation. Without much being said about what Terry is looking for in his next contract, the possibilities are present where the Celtics could lose two PG and have to start over. Daniel Theis also has a restricted Free Agency situation and along with Baynes, he was less than productive as well. The opportunity is there to also lose both Baynes and Theis. They could be looking to fill the 5 position along with the PG. Unfortunately, Boston has already agreed to terms with Guershon Yabusele, which I believe to be a waste of money and roster spot. Minimal playing time for a player that to me, is too small for the Center or Power Forward position and too big and nonathletic for the Small Forward position. Marcus Morris is the only Unrestricted Free Agent the team has. Although he shows signs of being able to play, he takes far too many out of rhythm bad shots and the Celtics can do without that. Much too often he tried to take a big shot during a crucial moment in the game just to miss and keep momentum with the opposing team. I'd much rather have a player that can shoot consistently and within the flow of the game for over $5million a year. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> With the players left on the team, the amount of potential should be a good starting point for next season. However, I do have my reserves with what Brad can get out of these guys. First, what is up with Gordon Hayward? Is he healthy? Not Healthy? I understand that it's a tough injury to return from right away but are the pressures of playing for such a high caliber team too much for him to handle? Or was Kyrie's ball dominant style just too much for anyone on this team to gel cohesively? With a full year in after the injury, I am in hopes that Hayward can return to the excellent player he was for the Utah Jazz. Next, and I've said this to friends time after time, has Jason Tatum already maxed out his full potential? The young Duke forward blasted in to the league with a purpose ending last season with a few consideration for the "ROTY" award. He had the league on notice and everyone wanted to see him blossom into a superstar. It is still early in his career to start believing he's just not that good, but he took major steps backwards this past season. Could it be the classic case of Sophomore slump? Let's hope so we can see the young man return for his 3rd season looking to improve on his game. Lastly, it's Jaylen Brown's inconsistencies, mostly on the offensive side of the ball. He's great defensively but lacks the ability to be a major threat night in and night out on offense. A big improvement to Jaylen's game has been his jump shooting, especially the 3 ball. For Jason and Jaylen, their young, athletic and they have time to improve. I truly believe, and it's been said before, The Celtics have too many players that play the same position. </span><br />

<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> So now the question of Anthony Davis comes in to play. Do the Celtics dump all their young talent and numerous picks for a 1 year shot at Anthony Davis? Is it really worth it to have to start all over again after next season? As much as I love Davis, who is a top 5 player and a amazing superstar, I don't think he's worth all that we've have to sacrifice to New Orleans for what would be a 1 year rental. Ultimately what I would like to see, let Kyrie walk if he wants to and attempt to resign Terry Rozier. Perhaps if he can get to a starting role, he can return to the "Scary Terry" that we got to know so well last season. </span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: small;">If they decide to not match the offer and let him go, I'd love to see Danny go hard for Kemba Walker. A good young player who is massively undervalued in Charlotte. Once they've filled the PG position, the Celtics would then have to address the lack of a true "Bigman". A player that can rebound on both ends and clog up the paint and swat some balls away. This past season, I seen too many drives to the basket go uncontested. It could be the style of defense they play, but I would love to see them return to the days of KG and Perk where there was no such thing as easy layups. Obviously KG isn't walking through that door, but there are player available that would suffice in the attempt to challenge drive more often. The Celtics do have their 27th pick from last season, Robert Williams. He didn't play much but there were so many reports of him playing so well last season that I wish I had seen more of him. He was injured a bit, but the best way for a player to progress is to actually get on the court and play. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"> It's going to be a busy off season for Danny Ainge with what I see as many needs to be filled. The Celtics could end up with as many as 4 first round picks. The question is, what will Ainge do with those picks? With the Draft lottery tonight, Tuesday, May 14th and the NBA draft on June 20th, answers will soon come and we'll see what our beloved Boston Celtics look like heading into the 2019-20 season. As Boston fans, we demand contending teams every season. Not always fulfilled, the current state of the team is still a playoff team and may be just a good player or 2 away from getting back to the NBA Finals.</span><br />

<br />
After the 85-86 season, the last year Boston won the championship, the Celtics have been anything but dominant.From the 1986-87 season to the 2006-07 season, the Celtics record was 837-853.They made the playoffs 11 times during those years only advancing to 3 Eastern Conference Finals (87,88,02).They won 5 division championships with the most recent being 2005.In the off-season of the 2003-2004, the now publicly owned team hired ex-Celtic player Danny <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Ainge</span> as Executive Director of Basketball Operations.Since then <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Ainge</span> as tried the "youth movement" which wasn't very successful.Many of the players selected have been traded away with the exception of a few.But as we have found out this season, those trades have finally paid dividends.<br />
<br />
After suffering their worse season since 98-99, Danny <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Ainge</span> and the Celtics organization finally said enough is enough.Paul Pierce, the only Celtics player left on the team from before Danny <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Ainge</span> took over, reportedly told the team "either get me a premier player to play with,or I want to be traded". <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Ainge</span> must have listened and took Pierce's request very seriously.The first big move was the acquisition of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">SG</span> Ray Allen from the Seattle Supersonics. The Celtics in my opinion, didn't give up much to get the seven time All-Star and the rights to rookie Glen Davis F/C from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">LSU</span> by trading PG <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">Delonte</span> West,<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10">SG</span> Wally <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11">Szczerbiak</span>, and the rights to their First Rd Draft Pick Jeff Green F from Georgetown.Celtics fans were optimistic about the trade but as they learned during the summer, that wasn't the last, nor the biggest trade they would make.After many rumors of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12">Garnett</span> being traded to Boston, the rumors were then turned into reality.Boston shipped Al Jefferson the most successful of the youth movement players, Ryan <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13">Gomes</span>,Gerald Green ,Theo Ratliff, Sebastian <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14">Telfair</span>, their first rd pick as well as Cash considerations for <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_15">Garnett</span>.Minnesota also received a first rd draft pick back from the Celtics that they had previously traded 2 years before in the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_16">Szczerbiak</span> and Ricky Davis deal.Now Pierce had the premier players and talent he wanted around him.Shortly after, Boston signed free agents James <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_17">Posey</span> and Eddie House to sure up the bench.<br />
<br />
So here we are 58 games in to the season and the Celtics have the best record in the NBA (46-12). Although Pierce,<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_18">Garnett</span>, and <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_19">Allen's</span> statistics have declined a little, they've continued to flourish as a team.Two year PG <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_20">Rajon</span> Rondo who was drafted by the Suns in 2006 came to Boston with a draft day trade.He is starting to show signs of being a great PG with the help of the players around him.The person that may have benefited the most by the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_21">Garnett</span> trade is C Kendrick Perkins.As the season has progressed, Perkins has become a very solid Center when he stays out of foul trouble. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_22">Garnett</span> opens the floor up allowing Perkins to get more rebounds, score more points and play a bit more freely around the defensive rim.He's not a tremendously talented player, but he has grown in leaps and bounds since he has first started for the Celtics and has contributed on both ends of the floor.The team recently signed veterans <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_23">PJ</span> Brown and Sam <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_24">Cassell</span> to deepen their bench even further giving the Celtics even more battle tested veterans.Rookie Glen "Big baby" Davis has been a real big <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_25">surprise</span> using his larger body to do such a great job on the boards.He won't wow you with his <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_26">statistical</span> line, but it's the little things he does night in and night out that stands out the most.With the "Big 3",Rondo,Perking and a solid bench, the Celtics look to restore their greatness and get the Celtic's Franchise back where it once was before. Atop the NBA and lifting that beautiful golden trophy in late June.</div>

<div align="center">
<span style="font-size: 130%;"><span style="font-size: 180%;"><b>SUPER BOWL XLII</b></span><br />
</span></div>
<div align="left">
The much anticipated re-match from week 17 is merely hours away.The New England Patriots bring their undefeated record(18-0) into the University of Phoenix Stadium to square off against the New York Giants(13-6).The Giants gave New England their toughest game this season and now they get another chance to spoil New England's historic season.The Patriots are heavily favored in this game but the Giants aren't going to roll over and just hand the Lombardi trophy to them.The Giants have just as much chance as New England to win this game.So lets take a look at what each team needs to do to come out victorious Sunday.<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: 130%;">5 Things Giants Need to do to Win</span></b><br />
<span style="font-size: 130%;"><b><span style="font-size: 100%;">#</span></b>1.</span><span style="font-size: 100%;">First and foremost, the Giants have to dictate how the game will be played.They must control the ball with the power run game and that will open up opportunities for Eli Manning to find holes in the New England defense.Although they scored 35pts on New England in week 17, they are not built as an offensive power house team.Giants will need to win the time of possession to keep Tom Brady and the explosive offense off the field.Shoot-out games are not their style so if the Giants are going to win, its will have to be a low scoring game.</span><br />
<br />
#2.Do not turn the ball over to New England.The Patriot offense will make you pay if you turn the ball over.As I stated before, Giants aren't a shoot-out team and New England will capitalize on the mistakes and the Giants will be playing catch up. A recipe for disaster for the Giants if they wish to bring home the Championship. <br />
<br />
#3.The defense must get after Brady and force him to get rid of the ball quicker than he wants.If they give Tom too much time, he'll be able to read the field and have time to go through his progressions to find open wide receivers.Get pressure on him and they may make him force a pass allowing a defensive back to jump the route and get the interception.<br />
<br />
#4.Keep Laurence Maroney to minimal gains.The Patriots have proven this post-season that they can run the ball if needed.If the Giants allow Maroney to get 5-6 yard gains, then that's going to set-up the play action passing game for New England.Maroney didn't play much during the first half of the regular season so to me, he's the healthiest running back in the league.<br />
<br />
#5.The final thing the Giants must do to beat New England is get some points from their defense and special teams.In the Week 17 game, Hixon ran back a kick-off for a touchdown.If they hadn't gotten that score then it would have only been 38-28 and might not have been considered such a good game.They wouldn't have the lead by 12 points, which was the most New England trailed a team all year.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: 130%;">5 Things Patriots need to do to Win</span></b><br />
<span style="font-size: 100%;">#1.Same thing the Giants need to do to Tom Brady, get pressure on Eli Manning. Obviously that's the name of the game but it's easier said than done, especially at this point in the season.If you allow Eli to hit his check down receivers its going to let them control the flow of the game.The check down receivers are just like a run game, letting Eli gain minimal, but crucial yards to keep the New England offense off the field. </span><br />
<br />
#2.Don't allow for the big play.In the first match-up on the very first play the Giants threw a deep ball to Plaxico Burress.By doing that it opened up everything in the middle.The Patriot defense works better when it can control the deep ball and the middle of the field.Keeping the passes short allows them to rally to the ball. I know it sounds contradictory to the above mentioned, but Bill would much prefer short 4-7 yards gains over much larger 25+ yard plays.<br />
<br />
#3.The third thing New England must do to win is counter what the Giants need to do to win.Keep Tom Brady on his feet and off his back.Giants are going to put pressure on him so the Patriots will need to be very sharp on their short passes as they have been all year. The offensive line has a big challenge ahead of them knowing that the front sever is the strong point of this Giants defense. Screens and short passes will beat an overly aggressive team.<br />
<br />
#4.Score quickly and often.If New England get 2 touchdowns on their first 2 possessions the Giants will have to play catch-up and that will make Eli try to force things.This will take the run game out of the game in the first half.When Eli tries to force the ball he gets his self in trouble like he did in week 17.He over threw his receiver and the pass was intercepted by New England.<br />
<br />
#5.Get Randy Moss involved quickly.After the record setting year of Brady and Moss, the Patriots need to lean on the talent and utilize Moss as much as possible in the early stages of the game. In the twoprevious playoff games that New England won to get to the Super Bowl,Moss had a total of 2 receptions for 32 yards and no touchdowns.Moss caught 2 or more touchdowns in 8 of the 16 games this season.He had 6 receptions with 2 touchdowns and 100 yards vs. the Giants in week 17. </div>

Some define greatness through records. Some define it through championships. When you think of great quarterbacks some that come right to mind are Unitas, Montana, Marino, Bradshaw, Starr, Staubach, Elway, Farve, Manning, and, whether you love him or you hate him, Brady. On Sunday, Tom Brady has a chance to do what none of the quarterbacks on that list have done, and that is go undefeated. Some already say Brady is the greatest postseason quaterback of all-time and his resume defends that argument very well. Three Super Bowl rings, an undefeated record at home in the playoffs, and two Super Bowl MVPs. Not to mention he is the leader of what might go down as the best football team to ever step on a football field. Not bad for a sixth round draft pick out of the University of Michigan.<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" ><br />What It Really Means To Go Undefeated?</span><br />It means you will be glorified in history forever. Everyone knows Don Shula because he was the only coach to go undefeated. No matter how much you hate the New England Patriots, you have to admire the accomplishments that are waiting for them if they can get by the Giants Sunday. They may have "cheated", teams may have let the game slip through their hands, but they are the only team without a loss this season. Us haters may gripe and groan if in fact by the end of Sunday night the Patriots do win, but regardless of the outcome we will have seen history Sunday night. I have already explained what it means to go undefeated, but what if the all-mighty Patriots fall on Sunday? The Giants will have pulled off the biggest upset in Super Bowl history. Whatever happens its a story we can tell our kids, our grandkids, and maybe even our great grandkids. Because being perfect never happens No baseball team has won 173 baseball games, No one wins 98 basketball games, and its hard to find a team that can go undefeated in college football and they play no more than 13 or 14 games. 36 years have passed since the Dolphins went undefeated and it maybe another 36 or more before we seen another great team like the Patriots.<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" ><br />Where does Brady Rank as Far As Greatest of All-Time?</span><br />Right now Tom Brady is not the best quarterback to ever play the game, but he is close. I still think San Francisco great Joe Montana is the best quarterback to ever play football. To me its not all about the records, its about stepping up when the light is shined on you. Montana did that better than any quarterback I have ever seen play. He pulled last minute heroics (i:e The Catch against the Cowboys), and he shattered the competition when the experts doubted him (i:e 55-10 Super Bowl drubbing against the #1 scoring defense in Denver). Another thing Montana has four Super Bowl rings. Brady only has three. But Brady has a great chance of surpassing Montana. Why Brady has a chance is because he still rather young. Brady is only 30 years old, and is hitting his prime right now. If he stays in the NFL for 5 or 6 more years he could win more rings and could make more memorable moments. When it is all said and done Brady could be the best player that ever played the game. Thats right not just quarterback but player. In fact Sunday might be the day he passes Joe Montana, because no great quarterback has ever lead their team to an undefeated season. Tom Brady will no doubt be heading to Canton when his career is over, but we will have to wait and see if in fact he will go down as the greatest quarterback to ever play the game of football.<br /><br />Nate Gonner is a guest writer for Boston's Sports Scene. <span style="font-family: "georgia";">David Ortiz, the Boston Red Sox 1B/DH has become one of the most clutch and dominant hitters in the game.Pitchers would rather pitch around him than to him.In 11 season, Ortiz, known as Big Papi, has increased his individual statistics each year.He spent 6 of his 11 years in Minnesota and those were the days he was known simply as David Ortiz. In his first three seasons, Ortiz only had 111 games played with 342 at bats. He had a total of 93 hits with 10 home runs and 52 runs batted in. In 2000, he got his opportunity to start.That year he was mediocre(by his standards), batting .282 with 10 home runs, 63 runs batted in, and 117 hits in 130 games. The following year his stats declined but he only played 89 games.His best year in Minnesota was 2002 when he was part of the team that lost the 2002 American League Championship to the Anaheim Angels. He hit 20 home runs and had 75 runs batted in. Although his average was down from 2000 (.272), his slugging percentage was a bit higher.<br />

<span style="font-family: "georgia";">In 2002 the Minnesota Twins released David in December and then he was picked up by Boston in January of 2003. That year he finished 5th in the MVP voting. In 2004 David was hands down the MVP of the Red Sox when they went on to win their first World Series in 86 years. Yet again, his statistics increased from the previous year. He amounted 41 home runs with 139 runs batted in and hit .301. Ortiz hit the game winning home run in game 4 of the ALCS against the Yankees. The following night, Ortiz came up clutch once again by hitting the game winning single to force a game 6. His performance throughout the Championship Series earned him ALCS Most Valuable Player. Career highs were set yet again in 2005. David hit a monsterous 47 home runs with 148 runs batted in. He hit .300 which at that point was only .001from his career high. Ortiz also had a career high in runs scored with 119. He finished second to Alex Rodriguez in the 2005 AL MVP race. In 2006 David Ortiz set a record for single season home runs by a Red Sox player. He surpassed Jimmie Foxx's 51HR's by putting fear in to pitchers, amassing an incredible 54 home runs. Even though his average dropped a bit (.287), he was still dominant with and incredible .636 slugging percentage and he tallied 137 runs batted in along with the 54 home runs. This past season, David's power numbers dropped a little, but he had his career high batting average at .332 and lead the Sox to their second World Series Championship in 4 years.</span></div>

Believe it or not, the home and away numbers are quite similar. Through 5 years in Boston, David has 277 runs, 92 home runs, 334 runs batted in and an average of .325. His away numbers are very close and he actually has more home runs on the road.The only real big difference is his average on </span></span></div>

<div>
Third and ten with 5:01 left in game 2 of the 2001 NFL season, New England Patriots vs New York Jets.Drew Bledsoe takes the snap, rolls right,runs for eight yards and then WHAM.Mo Lewis, formerly of the New York Jets, delivers a blow to Drew Bledsoe's midsection right in front of New England's bench.</div>
<br />
<div>
</div>
<div>
Drew Bledsoe, who was initially drafted as the face of the franchise in 1996, suffered an internal organ injury that sidelined him for a few weeks.However, as NFL fans across the country have found out, that would be the last of Drew starting games in a Patriots uniform. He did make 1 final appearance when he came in to the AFC Championship game vs the Pittsburg Steelers later that year leading the team to Victory. Assuring them of a Super Bowl match-up against the mighty St. Louis Rams, known as the "Greatest Show on Turf". As we know now, this would be the last time Drew would wear the red, white and blue of the New England Patriots.</div>
<br />
<div>
</div>
<div>
The Patriots ended up punting the ball the play after Bledsoe got injured, but when the Patriots return to the field, in comes the back up quarterback, #12 Tom Brady. At this point, Patriot fans don't realize what's to come from this untested, 2nd year 6th round pick quarterback from Michigan. Although he had proven his worth at Michgan, the 6'5" quarterback slipped deep in to the 2000 NFL draft. Soon enough the fan's of New England would look back and in a sense, be thankful Mo Lewis would forever alter the destiny of the New England Patriots with that hit on Bledsoe. Don't get me wrong, Pats fans weren't wishing harm to anyone, they'd be thankful to him for opening the doors for Tom.</div>
<br />
<div>
</div>
<div>
Here we are in 2008 and ever since that incident, the New England Patriots have become a perennial powerhouse. After the "hit heard around New England" in game 2 of the 2001 season, in which the Patriots lost 10-3, Tom Brady has been one of the most consistent quarterbacks in the NFL. He's lead the Patriots to 3 Super Bowl titles, being awarded Super Bowl MVP in 2 of them.This year they became the only team to have an undefeated, regular 16 game season record.The Patriots have a chance to join the 72' Miami Dolphins by achieving a perfect record by winning all playoff games and the Super Bowl. That would make them 19-0 and a top choice for the label as the greatest team ever.</div>

The man who has made the hoodie with the cut-off sleeves so famous, Bill Belichick. He's a defensive specialist and a preacher of the "just do your job" mentality. Not a very outspoken person when it comes to football, but he prides himself on doing the small things right. Belichick continues mix the perfect blend of youth and veteran players to carry out his distinctive scheme. In previous years,Belichick's defense has been the back bone of their winning ways. Together Brady and Belichick are 86-23 in the regular season,10-2 in the playoffs, and they have won all 3 Super Bowls they appeared in. If the Patriots win Super Bowl 42, that will be their 4th Super Bowl title in 7 years.<br />
<br />
What the Patriots have accomplished since 2001 is remarkable. But as we have learned in history, every empire must fall. It's only a matter if time and the clock keeps on ticking. The day will come when the once dominant New England Patriots, find themselves on the other side of the spectrum looking up. My only advice I have for my fellow Patriot fans is "Enjoy it while it lasts because there will be a time when we are talking about old Patriot glory days as if it was a lifetime ago".</div>
